ML-Driven LiveOps

This methodology is designed for live games and products where static balancing and manual LiveOps no longer scale. The objective is to build a controlled, predictable dynamic balancing and LiveOps system powered by machine learning, delivering sustainable LTV growth without degrading retention or player experience

Product & Economic Baseline

The process begins with establishing a baseline across key metrics: ARPU, ARPPU, LTV, retention (D1/D7/D30), progression velocity, and churn points. Core gameplay loops, economy flows, friction points, and monetization triggers are analyzed. A formalized model of the current balance and player behavior is constructed.

Player Segmentation
& Behavioral Modeling

Players are segmented by playstyle, progression pace, spending behavior, and sensitivity to difficulty. ML models are trained on historical data to predict churn risk, conversion probability, payment likelihood, and expected LTV. Segmentation becomes dynamic and continuously updated in real time.

ML-Driven Dynamic Balancing

Difficulty, rewards, drop rates, timers, and offers are moved into a configuration-driven system. ML algorithms adapt balance parameters per segment and lifecycle stage, keeping players within an optimal “flow window” without sharp difficulty spikes or progression devaluation.

LiveOps Control & Experimentation

The system supports continuous A/B and multi-armed bandit experimentation. Decisions are driven by statistically significant impact on LTV rather than short-term ARPU alone. All changes are deployed through safe LiveOps mechanisms without requiring client updates.

Predictability
& Economy Protection

ML models are used not only for optimization but also for risk control: preventing inflation, exploits, pay-to-win escalation, and retention degradation. The economy remains stable and predictable even under aggressive LiveOps scenarios.

Measurable Impact

The methodology delivers 15–25% LTV growth, 10–20% uplift in payment conversion, and 5–10% churn reduction. LiveOps evolves from manual tuning to a scalable ML-driven system, enabling sustainable metric growth and long-term product scalability.

Task

A live free-to-play game with a large active audience relied on static balance parameters and manual LiveOps operations. Progression spikes, uneven difficulty curves, and generic monetization offers led to early churn and plateaued LTV. Balance changes required frequent client updates and produced unpredictable side effects across player segments.
Introduce a dynamic, ML-driven LiveOps system to stabilize progression, personalize balance and offers, and deliver predictable LTV growth without harming retention or player experience.

Solution

A full product and economic baseline was established across retention, progression velocity, ARPU, ARPPU, and churn points. Players were segmented by behavior, progression pace, and spending sensitivity. Machine learning models were trained to predict churn risk, conversion probability, and expected LTV.
Core balance parameters—difficulty, rewards, drop rates, timers, and offers—were migrated to a configuration-driven system. ML models dynamically adjusted these parameters per segment and lifecycle stage, keeping players within an optimal engagement window. Continuous A/B testing and bandit-based experiments validated changes in real time, while economy safeguards prevented inflation and exploit scenarios.
3

Result

  • LTV increased by 22% within three months of rollout.
  • Payment conversion improved by 15%, with no degradation in D1/D7/D30 retention.
  • Early-game churn reduced by 8%.
  • Balance updates and monetization tuning were executed without client releases.
  • LiveOps shifted from manual tuning to a predictable, data-driven system.
